The island Tunø

Tunø
– An island you simply must visit

Even as the ferry arrives in the harbour you can feel the wonderfully unique ambience of the small island of Tunø. Goods are being loaded and unloaded, people are embarking and disembarking, and the air is alive with news and gossip. People and traffic swarm everywhere - not, however, that that includes cars, as cars are not allowed on the island. But there are tractors of all kinds and bicycles aplenty, towing all manner of imaginative trailers.

Shortly after, everything is peace and perfect idyll. A few steps from the harbour lies the town of Tunø where you can enjoy a meal in the ”Det gamle Mejeri” inn, with live music throughout summer. Also, in the town lies the Tunø grocer’s house, which offers a wide selection of con-venience goods. At the small Tunø Museum you can get an insight into the history of the island. Also, be sure not to miss the wonderful views from the combined church tower and light-house.
A foot-path (approx. 7 km) leads around the island. To walk around the island takes approx. 3 hours, going through the highly varied landscapes with commons, woodland, bogs and beaches. The island is favoured with a mild climate which encourages a richly varied flora and fauna. It is recommended to buy the island’s renowned leeks and other vegetables to take home.

Churchtower and lighthouse

The idea is obvious, but nevertheless a combination of church tower and lighthouse is something very rare. But such a two-in-one tower can be found on Tunø. Tunø church stands on one of the is-lands highest points, and in 1801 it was decided that the church tower should be extended and the top adapted as a lighthouse. There is entrance to the tower for some hours each day and from there there is a view that encompasses Tunø, Samsø and all of Århus Bay.
